When did legislation become required to replace common sense?

The other day in St. Louis county, the council voted in favor of changing the anti-discrimination law, adding to it, gender identity and sexual orientation.

According to KSDK, "The bill will make it illegal to deny things like housing and employment based on sexual orientation and gender identity. As the law stands currently people can be denied public accommodations and be fired just for being a part of the LGBT community."

That is correct, in 2012 we still need a legislator to define that you cannot be denied basic rights such as a home and a job, just because of who they chose to show affection to. Even more ludacris, is the number of people opposing this bill. How is this even a question? Insert any other group here... blacks, women, blondes, Jews... and there wouldn't be a debate. Equal Human Rights are for everyone, not just those who think like you, look like you or act the way you want them to.

I can respect some people's opinion that homosexuality is wrong. I don't agree with that opinion, but I can respect the thought. What I cannot fathom, is someone's belief that they have the right or responsabilty to not only pass judgement, but control someone elses life. No one is being asked to try an 'alternative lifestyle'. I am just asking for everyone to coexist respectfully.

The origin of the Golden Rule is disputed, but it's appropriateness cannot be denied. If there is one lesson that I can instill in my children, it is to judge people based on their kindness to others, not how they speak, what they wear, where they live or what is in their bank account.

I cannot explain to you, nor have I ever been asked to explain why I am attratced to men. Everyone desreves the same respect.
